The assumption it does still makes is that the if there is DST period is larger then a single month. GenoDive features the intuitive user interface that you expect on a Mac, as well as a large number of different types of analyses. It tries to get the best of all worlds taking into account all the comments and previously suggested answers and specifically it:ġ) Caches the result for per year stdTimezoneOffset so that you don't need to recalculate it when testing multiple dates in the same year.Ģ) It does not assume that DST (if it exists at all) is necessarily in July,Īnd will work even if it will at some point and some place be any month. The day of the week will advance 1 day for every year and 2 days for every leap after 2004. If you don't want to use mktime, you can use program secondsunday. It used a day of the week to compute daylight savings time. Return this.getTimezoneOffset() < this.stdTimezoneOffset() this code uses mktime to get a day of the week. It returns negative numbers for the Eastern Hemisphere (such -600 for Sydney in winter, despite this being "ahead" ( UTC+10h). getTimezoneOffset returns 480 (positive 480 minutes) in December (winter, Standard Time), rather than -480. For example, Los Angeles is UTC–8h Standard, UTC-7h DST. polysat can assist the user in estimating the ploidy of samples, and it can estimate allele frequencies in populations, calculate pairwise or. Allelic diversity statistics and Polymorphic Information Content are also available. Note that getTimezoneOffset returns positive numbers of minutes for zones west of UTC, which are usually stated as negative hours (since they're "behind" UTC). These distances can be used for the calculation of clonal diversity statistics or used for further analysis in R. Thus it determines the expected output during Standard Time, and it compares whether the output of the given date the same (Standard) or less (DST). This code uses the fact that getTimezoneOffset returns a greater value during Standard Time versus Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that children and adults consume calories based on their age group, sex, and level of activity, which is anywhere between 1,600 and 3,000 calories, depending on where you fall on that scale.īut while calories, and the notion of a 2,000-calorie-per-day diet, continues to be a part of dietary and health guidelines in the U.S., it’s important to note that the creators of the concept had a much less health-centric aim in mind in 1896 - which is when this proposed number of calories per day was first introduced. Below, Lustig breaks down what a calorie is, its relation to your metabolism, and how to fuel to stay energized and strong. In other words, how many calories you should consume, and burn, per day is irrelevant. He explained that calorie consumption (and expenditure) are part of a person’s overall metabolic processes, or metabolism, and are highly dependent on the person’s genetics, age, environment and the chemical makeup of the foods they consume. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L., a pediatric endocrinologist and author of “The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine.” But when it comes to using that metric as a means for improving, and measuring, your health, counting calories is pretty much useless, said Robert H. In short, it’s hard to escape discourse around calories in the fitness world. Many wearable fitness trackers also claim to know the number of calories a person can scorch throughout the day. Scan the Nutrition Facts label on the back of any packaged food item in the U.S., and you’ll see its total calories - a figure based on a 2,000-calorie-per-day diet, as the label will likely also note in a tiny disclaimer font.Ĭalorie counting, or burning rather, has often been used as an indicator of how “successful” a workout was - hop on a treadmill or elliptical and the machine will often display how many calories you’ve “burned” while on it. The bold part is the handwavey part, because I can't think of a strong reason why there isn't a more creative, better thing you can do there. If there’s one metric society tends to measure food with, it’s calories. And one rope with both ends similar can be cut in half to produce two ropes with similar ends, so you can do N/16. With two ropes with similar ends, you can also produce two half-length ropes with different ends, so the best you can do is actually N/8. That's with two ropes with different ends. So with two ropes you can destroy one to reduce the other to N/2 in N/2 time, then destroy the other in N/4 time. You need to destroy at least one rope in order to reduce the rest, because you have no other way of keeping time. Reduce its length by N/2 (burn one end). This is because in time N/2, for one rope you can either Given two ropes with different ends and burn time N, the best you can do is N/4. I can't think of a rigorous reason, but here's a unrigorous one: Say two ropes have "similar ends" if they burn at the same rate from each end. I don't think you can do better than that. Then set fire to other end of the remaining rope, which will finish burning in 3.75 minutes. Set fire to the other end of the smaller rope, so that it burns down in 7.5 minutes. Lay them in rows and set fire to opposite ends, so you have this: F-Įventually, the flames will meet, like this: F-Įach is now a 15 minute rope. Since you can cut it in half, this is equivalent to having two ropes of 30 minutes long. With Stephanie Chapman-Baker, Kevin Walker, Julie Johnson, Devin Estes. In Statego, this brings about a zero-sum game: any gain a player makes results in a loss for their opponent.īecause of Stratego’s complexity, DeepNash took a model-free approach to their algorithm. Put simply, in each game, players can tap into a set of strategies followed by everyone, so that no single player gains anything by changing their own strategy. A pioneer in game theory, Nash won the Nobel Prize for his work for the Nash equilibrium. Instead, the magic touch for DeepNash came from the mathematician John Nash, portrayed in the film A Beautiful Mind. Dubbed the Monte Carlo tree search, a “stalwart approach to AI-based gaming,” the technique plots out potential routes-like branches on a tree-that could result in victory. Stratego’s complexity means that the usual strategy for searching gameplay moves is out of the question. The challenge is “what excited us,” he said. “The sheer complexity of the number of possible outcomes in Stratego means algorithms that perform well on perfect-information games, and even those that work for poker, don’t work,” said study author Dr. Stratego’s game tree, the sum of all potential moves in the game, totals a staggering 10 535. Stratego has over 10 66 possible starting positions-far more than all the stars in the universe. The number of potential game plays is mind-blowing. But that strategy faltered for Stratego, largely because of the length of game, which unlike poker, normally encompasses hundreds of moves. Stratego, in contrast, has a touch of Texas Hold ’em, a poker game DeepMind previously conquered with an algorithm. Even the most successful game-play algorithms, such as AlphaGo and AlphaZero, rely on complete information. This level of uncertainty is partly why Stratego has stumped AI for ages. Players must “balance all possible outcomes” any time they make a decision, the authors explained. Unlike chess or Go, in which each piece and movement is in view, Stratego is a game with limited information. Stratego is especially challenging for AI because players can’t see the location of their opponents’ pieces, both during initial setup and throughout gameplay. The goal is to eliminate the opposition and capture their flag. Each piece has a different name and numerical rank, such as “marshal,” “general,” “scout,” or “spy.” Higher ranking pieces can capture lower ones. Each side has 40 pieces they can place at any position on the board. The game is essentially capture the flag. In terms of complexity, Stratego is a completely different beast compared to chess, Go, or poker-all games that AI has previously mastered. As AI gains more flexible reasoning, becomes more generalized, and learns to navigate social situations, it may also spark insights into our own brains’ neural processes and cognition. Noam Brown at Meta AI, who wasn’t involved in the research.ĭeepNash’s triumph comes hot on the heels of another AI advance this month, where an algorithm learned to play Diplomacy-a game that requires negotiation and cooperation to win. “If you’re making a self-driving car, you don’t want to assume that all the other drivers on the road are perfectly rational, and going to behave optimally,” said Dr. AI systems that can easily maneuver the randomness of our world and adjust their “behavior” accordingly could one day handle real-world problems with limited information, such as optimizing traffic flow to reduce travel time and (hopefully) quenching road rage as self-driving cars become ever more present. With DeepNash, “game-playing artificial intelligence (AI) systems have advanced to a new frontier.” “Unlike chess and Go, Stratego is a game of imperfect information: players cannot directly observe the identities of their opponent’s pieces,” DeepMind wrote in a blog post. A notoriously difficult game for AI, Stratego requires multiple strengths of human wit: long-term thinking, bluffing, and strategizing, all without knowing your opponent’s pieces on the board. The result, DeepNash, toppled human experts in a highly strategic board game called Stratego. The trick was to interweave game theory into an algorithmic strategy loosely based on the human brain called deep reinforcement learning. Yet to navigate our unpredictable world, it needs to learn to make choices with imperfect information-as we do every single day.ĭeepMind just took a stab at solving this conundrum. This is where the idea of Opposed Schools of Magic come from. There was a sub-type of "Magic User" called an "Illusionist" that had access to a slightly different battery of spells, but beyond that the idea of specialization was a non-thing. In 1E, there were no restrictions on schools of magic. So if the answer would be different between editions, I would ask that an answer points out these differences if it is realistic to do so.īut the standard idea of "Opposed Schools of Magic" only exists in 2E. Note that if this question makes most sense in 3.5e or something, the reason I've tagged it dungeons-and-dragons is because I don't know enough outside of 5e to even know what edition I'm talking about. Have I completely missed the point here, or is there an "official" arrangement of the schools of magic such that specialising in one prohibits its opposite? Looking online gives me a bunch of contradicting information, ranging from pictures of schools arranged in different orders from one picture to the next (so the opposite of Abjuration in one picture is different from the opposite of Abjuration in the next picture so which one is correct, then?) to forums talking about choosing which schools to be prohibited from, which goes against this notion of there being a fixed arrangement of opposite schools. However, I am only familiar with 5e (which doesn't include this notion of schools of magic opposing each other such that they prohibit learning from another school) and NWN2 (which seems to be arbitrary and fixed for example, specialising in Abjuration prohibits Conjuration, but specialising in Evocation also prohibits Conjuration! How does that make any sense?), so I do not know where to look to learn of the "official" opposing schools. I understand that, in some editions of D&D, there has been this concept of opposing schools of magic, and that specialising in one school may prevent you from learning as another (in the context of wizards, that is). note to note) links rather that text (text-to-note) links. The guard field code to place in the ‘Guard’ box of the link is: $Visits("Fourth note")>3
